BIG LABOR'S TOP 10 WISH
LIST
January 6,
2009
- Employee Free Choice Act
Re-read our letter to President Obama
- Repeal of Section 14 (B) of Taft-Hartley
Act
We also touched on this issue in our letter
to President Obama. Basically it would take
from states the right to enact right-to-work
laws
- Government Unions
"Big Labor" demands the forced
unionization of EMT's, firefighters and
police by federal fiat -overturning the laws
of more than two dozen states
- Huge expansion of Family Medical Leave
Act
No incoming President has ever set a more
ambitious work-family agenda than Barack Obama-here
are just 3 examples:
- a. The Healthy Families Act
This legislation sponsored by Sen. Ted Kennedy
and Rep. Rosa DeLauro would require employers
with just 15 workers to provide 7 paid days
for their own or a family member's
illness-we object to the proposal's
rigid, one-size-fits-all mandate. We also
know once this law is passed, it is easy
next year to reduce the number of employees
to 5. We also believe that this law is unnecessary
because 75% of employers already provide
paid sick days.
- b. The President wants to dramatically
expand the 1993 Family Leave Act
Currently employees of companies with
50 or more workers can take up to 12 weeks
of unpaid leave to tend to newborn and adopted
children, sick family members or the workers'
own medical conditions. President-Elect
Obama, this year wants to extend the mandate
to employers with 25 workers and cover far
more purposes, including children's
school needs and the care of a wider range
of family members
- c. The largest political gambit of
all - is paid family leave - this program will
be similar to the state of California's
which uses the state's temporary-disability-insurance
fund to provide up to six weeks paid family
leave
- Minimum Wage Hike
The President promised to "raise the
minimum wage to $9.50 an hour"
- Patriot Employer Act
This bill imposes tax increases on firms
that have operations outside the United States
and tax hikes on those firms that don't
agree to "labor neutrality", card
check, etc.
- Union Financial Disclosure
This concept would drastically revise the
Office of Labor Management's Standards
Form LM2 that has continually embarrassed and
caused many legal problems for union bosses
by forcing them to reveal their salaries and
spending
- Fair Pay Act
This proposal is a direct response to the
"Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber
Co." Supreme Court decision in which it
said that the 180-day statute of limitations
for equal pay lawsuits begins on the date the
pay was agreed to. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair
Pay Act would re-start the statute of limitations
each time that a paycheck was received.
- National Labor Relations Board
The goal is to ram through pro-union appointees
to the NLRB
- Overturn President Bush's Executive
Order on Beck Rights Notices
In 1988 the Supreme Court ruled that employees
could demand a refund on that portion of their
dues that was being used for political purposes
over their objection. They felt this was a violation
of the First Amendment. The court also found
that 79% of member dues were not being used
properly. This "Beck Decision" is
organized labors' "Achilles Heel".
We have to create a firestorm
of opposition-please contact your legislators
and make them know you are totally opposed to
this type of egregious legislation.
